Food Woes

I'm having a tough time getting Luke to eat real food - I mean in more than a puree form.  Tooth #3 is on its way in and that may be impacting our efforts slightly but this boy is getting so picky.  Baby food out of a jar is the easy way out but I'm thinking I need start making some of my own in order to help him transition.

Ever since he started solids its been a slow go.  For the longest time he wouldn't eat any kind of cereal and now he loves oatmeal and other cereals mixed in with his fruits.  He spit out cheerios for a while and now you have to watch how many you put out for him at once because he hoards them in his cheeks.  So I'm thinking this too will pass but it has been rough.

The basics that I thought every kid likes - mac and cheese and mashed potatoes - both no go's for our little man.  I bought some books with recipes to help him make the transition to what we eat and because the meals in the baby food jars stink and if I wouldn't eat it I feel bad giving it to him.  This weekend we tried some eggy toast, pancakes, and green beans, no puree form - which seemed more like a new toy for him than food but he ate some.  Last night we went to the grocery store and I bought all sorts of stuff to make food this week.

After work today I came home and made him some Cheesy Stars Alphabet Pasta - cooked a cup of carrots, mashed them up into smaller chunks, mixed it with some cheddar cheese and alphabet pasta.  I tasted it and it was pretty darn good.  It took forever to make, although I had a little helper pulling at my leg for the majority of the time.  I put a serving in this dish and daddy attempted to feed him.  All my hard work and nothing but yucko faces and spitting it out.  Boo.  I'm not giving up on it though, the leftovers are in the fridge and we'll break it back out tomorrow.

So we'll continue with small chunks of fruits and veggies, he starting to like toast, and we'll keep plugging along with the pastas and other real meals.  One day he'll eat it all, and then one day he'll turn into a teenager that won't stop eating so I should be careful what I ask for.

I'm glad you are making some healthy foods ... he will in time like it ... don't give up ... something new doesn't happen over night :-) Let's see what he does with his birthday cake :-)
