Spring is Coming!

Today was a nice little Saturday, you know slept in until 7, a little family time, some shopping, lots more family time, and oh yeah BASEBALL!  Spring training games mean spring is near and summer is right behind it, woo hoo!  I only watched maybe an inning or two but it was on in the background and I loved it.

Life with a Toddler

...is sticky.  Luke has been stuck to me like gum on my shoe lately.  Holding onto my pant legs, trying to walk everywhere with me, wanting to see every single thing I am doing.

...is eventful.  As I'm cooking dinner Luke emptied the pantry, played with the cat food - he's learned to open the container and get food out, pulled pots and pans out of the cabinets, and attempted to take every condiment out of the fridge.

...is picky.  I've been trying really hard to make him new foods lately and staying away from the pre-made stuff.  Only problem, he's not really into it.  This weekend it was homemade chicken nuggets - rejected!  Pasta sprinkled with Parmesan cheese - not a huge fan.  Homemade mac and cheese (with lots of yummy cheese) - not even a single bit swallowed.  He does love broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, strawberries, and bananas so its not too bad I guess.

...is shrinking.  We're down to one nap a day.  The verdict is still out on my opinion on this.  It's easier to plan out the day around only one nap but he's not quite used to it and gets really cranky around 11-12.  I think another week or so and we'll be good.

...is quite the ride.  His moods change at the drop of a hat. I thought one was a little early for tantrums but he's got it down.  Luckily they go as fast as they come for the most part.  So much change at once for him, 1 nap, no more formula, only one bottle a day.  I'd be moody too :)

...is fun.  Luke cracks us up all the time.

And is really tiring, night all!

Some pictures of the birthday boy today.  We saved his presents from Mommy and Daddy for today and spent the rest of the day just relaxing and spending time together.  Great 1st Birthday!

1st Birthday Party

Luke's 1st Birthday party was today and it turned out great.  I'm too tired to write about it but here are some pictures.  I realized we only really have cake/balloon pictures so if anyone has any others from the rest of the day send them my way please.

The Birthday Boy
Cake!
Wasn't too sure about the whole smashing part.

He did eventually eat some of it.

Not sure what he liked better, cake or balloons!
Happy Birthday Luke, we love you!

Ta Da!

Now we're all set for tomorrow!  And I'm pretty darn pleased about how it turned out.  I got into the spirit of things and I just kept going and going and going on the smash cake and accidentally smeared some of the icing...just getting things started for the little guy.  Can't wait for tomorrow!

Shopping

...is sooo boring!

I love how he's totally lounging in the cart but I think he hated every minute of it.

Sooo....

in one week my little man is going to be 1!!!  I'm freaking out just a little bit.  Where the heck did this year go?!?!  I finished up some last minute shopping for Luke's party this weekend, just a few things we need to pick up later this week food wise and we're set.   I'll bake and decorate later this week, then next Saturday we'll par-tay!  Yay!

In some other Luke news he likes broccoli!  I make it a little extra mushy for him and just give him the "tree tops" as we call it and he eats it all by himself.  I'm so happy!

I also learned when he gets really, really quiet and goes in the other room he is probably playing with the cat food.  Scooter just sat there and starred him down yesterday.  At least he hasn't tried to eat it yet.

And lastly, the boy likes to dance. We had our own little dance party earlier this week but I can't get the video to load correctly right now.  I'll work on that later but it involves a little head bopping and some crazy feet moves.  Hilarious.

The Next Great Baker

or just little ol' me trying to make a cute birthday cake.

Step 1 - gather all the supplies.  Check!
I have the pan, all the ingredients, the necessary tools, and a picture of what I'm trying to accomplish.

Step 2 - try to make your own icing.  Check!
I made buttercream icing a few weeks ago.  Tasted delicious.  At one point I was unsure that it would actually turn out but its amazing what a tablespoon of milk can do, its like magic.

Step 3 - practice your technique. Check!
Me and a cookie sheet had date night and I practiced my stars, my shells, my dots.  Shells kicked my butt the other two I mastered.

Step 4 - make the cake.  Check! - well sort of
Since we had a snow day today and I had a son who isn't sleeping at night but napping a ton during the day, I had some extra time on my hands so I decided to do a test run.  Baking the cake was easy but after that I was completely thrown off.  I apparently picked an 'easy' design and an 'easy' cake shape....or not.

I made a new batch of icing, even better than last time I think and the perfect consistency to work with.  Just icing the base layer on the cake was nuts.  The #1 had too many curves, dips, and the bottom wasn't completely flat.  At that point I decided to change my design.  There was no way I was getting the definition they had in the picture.  Covering the edges with big stars would fix that problem though.  So anyway, this was my goal at first

After about an hour this is what I came up with.

I didn't mess with coloring the icing tonight but everything that I had to do with a decorating tip will be blue - not sure that I'm going to use the dots at all and it obviously won't say snow.

I always watch those cake decorating shows on TV and think, I could do that.  Tonight I was put in my place.

I hope my co-workers are hungry tomorrow...actually I just hope we have school.
